Certainty of the Flesh by WangShui | Haus der Kunst
I worked on motion capture and retargeting for Certainty of the Flesh, a live video and AI simulation by WangShui, on view at Haus der Kunst in Munich from September 8, 2023 to April 28, 2024. The piece is part of the exhibition, Window of Tolerance, which integrates human behaviour and artificial intelligence to question the everyday structures of our perception.
Process
I recorded multiple scenes with the artist and 6 performers at ONX Studio, using OptiTrack, Manus, and Faceware for body, hand, and facial motion capture. I edited the motion data in Motive and retargeted the characters in MotionBuilder. The animation sequences were programmed by machine learning developers into a generative feed that plays out as a form of sci-fi reality television on loop.
