Antariksha Studio | Transmedia Storytelling

Based in Goa and New York, Antariksha Studio is a transmedia collective crafting indie video games, multimedia installations (AR/VR), and performances. We leverage technologies like game engines, motion capture, photogrammetry, and 3D modeling to create culturally rich speculative designs that celebrate the vibrant arts, dance, and music of South Asia. Our distributed team consists of animators, dancers, game designers, programmers, writers, researchers, and musicians.

Role and Projects

I oversee the development of new worlds and stories, shaping innovative approaches to narration, storyboarding, character art, environment design, and interactive elements.

We have been working towards releasing our latest vertical slice, Antara, which features a mother-son duo undertaking a cosmic pilgrimage on an aircraft powered by art, music, and dance. The story unfolds across time and space, oscillating between a temple town in South India during the early 1900s and outerspace. Supported by an Epic MegaGrant, this project iterates on our previous demo and utilizes advanced workflows in Unreal Engine.

As part of the Extended Realities Track at NEW INC (2022-24), we have been incubating a virtual reality experience inspired by South Asian culture, history, science fiction, fantasy, and futurism. Set in India in 2079, the story follows the adventures of a cyborg, Meenakshi, and her friends as they discover lost art, dance, and music after a period of planetary collapse.

We have received grants from Epic Games, Pro Helvetia, and The British Council and presented our work at Sheffield DocFest, IndieCade, The Roundhouse, and other global venues.

Environment Design

Our environment designs incorporate rich architectural details and multicultural sites.

Photogrammetry

We have collaborated with cultural organizations such as Dakshinachitra Heritage Museum in India, Art Gallery of New South Wales in Australia, and The British Film Institute in the UK to digitize cultural artifacts, integrating them into our immersive worlds. These include 3D scans of vernacular objects, furniture, utensils, and other crafts.

Character Design

Our character designs emphasize diversity, capturing cultural nuances in clothing, props, and ornaments, and featuring unique characters in terms of race, gender, age, religion, occupation, and body type.

Interactive Elements

We have designed captivating musical puzzles and rhythmic game mechanics inspired by the classical dance form of Bharatanatyam and Carnatic Music.
