As an Adjunct Professor at NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications and Interactive Media Arts Programs, Ami teaches virtual production techniques while facilitating learning about critical making and ethics. Her practice explores questions related to privacy, self-identity, and representation in online social spaces and virtual worlds. She is passionate about developing culturally-rooted speculative designs and immersive experiences, and has received support from Epic Games, The British Council, and NEW INC for her projects with Antariksha Studio, a transmedia collective based out of Goa, India. Ami has collaborated on exhibitions and public programs for MoMA, Venice Biennale, ONX Studio, BFI London Film Festival, and The New Museum among others. Antariksha Studio presented a single-video channel installation, Elsewhere in India, along with a video game demo, Antariksha Sanchar: Episode 0.Elsewhere in IndiaElsewhere in India depicts machinima-style vignettes exploring future urbanity, culture, and technology in South Asia. By combining immersive game worlds, archival footage, motion capture, animation, and generative art, Antariksha Studio remixes classical and emergent elements. necessary—way to share information, organize and engage with one another, and do business. But while the promise of secure messaging is private communications and user control over the spread of personal or group information, the reality is often more complicated, particularly in the age of surveillance capitalism. An overlapping, interconnected set of engineering, design, and system factors, coupled with varied user behaviors and shifting policy environments, have created conditions in which individuals may subvert their own interests or those of their communities while using encrypted messaging apps. ProcessFrom September 2022 through May 2023, we analyzed popular messaging apps–including Signal, WhatsApp, Telegram, Messages by Google, Apple Messages and Meta’s Messenger–across a range of dimensions, including technical security, user experience, how the apps engage with users and developers, and their policies, terms and conditions. We sought to understand how people form mental models of their own individual or group digital security and corresponding threats, ways in which the technical and design decisions that the developers of encrypted messaging apps make can leave users vulnerable, and potential solutions that encompass technical, design, and policy adjustments.To answer these questions, we adopted principles from frameworks such as Privacy by Design and Design from the Margins. We completed a technical review of selected apps; a detailed user experience and user interaction design analysis; and a comprehensive policy review. We interviewed a range of experts, and conducted field work with at-risk users including abortion rights activists in New Orleans, Louisiana and journalists in Delhi, India. <img width="1668" As part of the Extended Realities Track at NEW INC (2022-24), we have been incubating a virtual reality experience inspired by South Asian culture, history, science fiction, fantasy, and futurism. Set in India in 2079, the story follows the adventures of a cyborg, Meenakshi, and her friends as they discover lost art, dance, and music after a period of planetary collapse. is a mid-career survey exhibition featuring over 25 sculptures, interactive works, and site-specific installations by conceptual artist Tallur L.N. The exhibition was on view at Grounds For Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ from May 2019 to January 2020.
